En 1982 se estrenó E.T. el Extraterrestre. El cantante Neil Diamond fue a verla junto a sus amigos, el entonces matrimonio de compositores formado por Carole Bayer Sager y Burt Bacharach. Cuando volvieron juntos a casa, aún emocionados, compusieron Hearthlight, una canción inspirada en la película.

Su letra parece una despedida de Elliot a su amigo alienígena. La canción se convirtió en el primer single de su 17º álbum de estudio, al que también daba título. El single fue el octavo de Diamond en llegar al top 5 en Estados Unidos, y el último en alcanzar el top 30.

Con lo que no contaban Diamond y sus amigos es con que a Universal Studios no le iba a agradar la idea de que se inspirasen tan obviamente en la película. Y es que, aunque no se mencione a E.T. directamente, las referencias son suficientemente claras como para ser demandados por infringir los derechos de la película. La Universal ganó la demanda, y recibió 25000 dólares de entonces como compensación.

El grupo de pop hawaiiano Times Five incluyó una versión en su disco Hanapa’a (2003).
